What’s up, readers? It’s Evrik back again. Today I want to cover one burning topic. Recently, I’ve heard people asking ‘So, when will metaverses become like full-fledged digital worlds?’ They mean worlds where we can spend a loooot of time virtually living another life. Spoiler: this article does not provide any exact answer, but we will take a multi-faceted look at this issue.
The idea of a fully-immersive metaverse has been around for quite some time, but with recent technological advancements, it seems like we are getting closer to making it a reality. A metaverse is a virtual world where users can interact with each other and the environment in a completely immersive way, similar to how we interact with the physical world. It is a vision of a future where we spend as much time in digital spaces as we do in physical ones, with the ability to do anything we want, from attending virtual concerts to building virtual homes.
The best experiences are yet to come, but metaverse users can already engage in such activities as:
- Socializing. Users can meet and interact with other users, form communities, and build relationships. Meta became the pioneer in this direction.
- Gaming. The metaverse offers a vast array of games that users can play, either individually or with others. For example, Bluelight.inc allows players to run startups and solve strategic challenges.
- Entertainment. Users can attend virtual concerts, watch movies, or engage in other forms of entertainment. Travis Scott’s appearance in Fortnite is a great case in point.
- Earning. Play-to-Earn, Play-and-Earn and Play-to-Own games serve the major goal of generating profit for players. Users are rewarded for daily activities, victories in battles, and other achievements.
Such technologies as Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Internet-of-Things make all these experiences more engaging and true-to-life. Blockchain and cryptocurrencies pave the road for decentralized economies in virtual worlds.
Despite all the challenges, there are already some major players investing in Web 3.0 and creation of the Metaverse. Facebook, for example, rebranded itself as Meta and announced its intention to create a metaverse. Other tech giants such as Microsoft and Amazon are also investing heavily in the development of VR and AR technologies, which will likely play a critical role in the development of a metaverse.
There are already some early examples of metaverse-like environments, such as Second Life and VRChat, where users can create avatars and interact with each other in a virtual world. These platforms have been around for several years and have already shown the potential for what a metaverse could be like. However, they still have limitations in terms of graphics, user interface, and overall user experience.
Here’s what I would include in the list of metaverses that offer a range of immersive experiences:
- Second Life is one of the oldest and the most popular metaverse. It allows users to create their own avatars and explore a vast virtual world. The platform offers a variety of experiences, from socializing in virtual clubs to attending live music events and art exhibitions.
- Decentraland is a decentralized virtual world where users can buy and sell virtual real estate using cryptocurrency. It offers a range of experiences, from exploring virtual museums to playing games and attending virtual concerts.
- Roblox is a gaming platform that allows users to create their own games and play in apps created by others. It has a large user base and offers a variety of immersive experiences, from role-playing games to action-packed adventures.
- VRChat is a virtual reality platform that allows users to create and customize their own avatars and explore a variety of virtual worlds. It offers a range of experiences, from attending virtual parties to playing games and enjoying live events.
- Minecraft is a popular sandbox game that allows users to build and explore virtual worlds. It has a large community of players and offers a variety of immersive experiences, from exploring virtual cities to participating in multiplayer games.
Overall, metaverses offer a range of immersive experiences, from socializing with others to exploring virtual worlds and attending live events. As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see even more innovative and exciting metaverse experiences in the future.
To create a fully-immersive metaverse, we will need to see further advancements in technology, such as the development of more powerful and efficient VR headsets and computers, as well as improvements in artificial intelligence and natural language processing. Additionally, there will need to be a massive investment in creating the necessary infrastructure and platforms to support a metaverse. This includes everything from server capacity to content creation tools and the ability to monetize virtual assets.
One of the main challenges in creating a metaverse is ensuring that it is accessible and inclusive to everyone. As we have seen with the internet, there is always the risk of creating digital divides, where certain groups of people are excluded from the benefits of the technology. It will be important to ensure that a metaverse is open to everyone and that it does not become a tool for further marginalizing certain groups.
Many experts reckon that we won’t see a full-fledged metaverse until 2040. It will take a lot of time for metaverses to become widely available, not to mention technological maturity of the industry. To solve these challenges, developers will minimally need to take advantage of wireless technologies, perhaps two or more paradigms further along, improve battery capacity and visual quality, boost internal or cloud-based graphical processing power and simultaneously decrease the size and increase the comfort of VR devices.
So, is a fully-immersive metaverse around the corner? The short answer is yes, but it will still take some time to fully develop. The current state of technology and virtual reality (VR) is still limited in terms of creating a truly immersive experience, but with the ongoing advancements in technology and the increasing popularity of VR, it is only a matter of time before we have a fully-functional metaverse.
While an ultimately immersive metaverse may still be several years away, the groundwork is already being laid for its development. With ongoing advancements in technology and growing investments from major players in the tech industry, we are getting closer to realizing this vision of a virtual world where we can interact with each other and the environment in a completely immersive way.
